Against Myself, banda española con cuatro álbumes de estudio, enarbola un estilo muy apegado al metal sinfónico, y cuenta con canciones de larga duración que se acercan a la musicalidad del progresivo. Su lanzamiento más reciente, titulado Tides Of Insanity (2023), recibió muy buenas críticas de parte de la comunidad metalera internacional. Valente platicó con Charly Carretón (batería), Alejandro Fung (bajo), Unai Iglesias (guitarra) y Elizabeth Amoedo (voz) sobre la actualidad de la banda.

Valente: ¡Hola, chicos! Charly, Elizabeth, Alejandro, y Unai, sean bienvenidos a Metalópolis, agradecemos mucho su tiempo y participación. ¿Cómo se encuentran?

Against Myself: ¡Hola! Todo muy bien. Tras un corto descanso de haber girado con Sirenia, la verdad es que con ganas de afrontar el concierto que se avecina dentro de un mes en Tomelloso, ultimando detalles.

Valente: Against Myself es una banda española de Symphonic Metal que cuenta con una buena trayectoria y que, con su último disco, Tides Of Insanity, ha ganado más seguidores en todo el mundo, pero comencemos por el principio. ¿De dónde surge este proyecto musical, por qué decantarse por el Symphonic Metal y cuál es el significado detrás del nombre Against Myself?

Charly: Against Myself surge en Argamasilla de Alba (Ciudad Real, España) con un grupo de jóvenes amigos de la localidad. Elegimos el Symphonic Metal porque crecimos escuchando bandas como Nightwish, Epica o Within Temptation y desde siempre nos ha encantado el poder combinar una orquesta sinfónica o un coro con la dureza del metal en nuestra música. En cuanto al nombre de la banda viene de esa inseguridad a la hora de si creábamos o no el proyecto, si iba a ir todo bien, etc. Estábamos un poco “contra nosotros mismos”.

Valente: Otro punto muy importante en el desarrollo de las bandas es el de las letras en sus canciones. ¿De dónde viene la inspiración para componer las letras de Against Myself y cuál es el mensaje que quieren compartir con el mundo? Algo interesante también es que siendo una banda española canten en inglés pues muchas bandas del país optan por las letras en español.

Elizabeth: Tides Of Insanity es el primer álbum conceptual de la banda, por lo cual todas las canciones están enlazadas entre sí y se busca la mejor narración posible de la historia sin dejar atrás las herramientas clásicas a la hora de escribir canciones o poemas. Concretamente en este disco la inspiración viene de la situación que estaba ocurriendo a nivel mundial, la impotencia y frustración ante una pandemia y las dificultades a la hora de intentar avanzar a nivel personal por parte de cada individuo. Personalmente siempre me ha gustado mucho más e incluso resultado más fácil escribir y cantar en inglés que en español, pero no estoy cerrada a experimentar en otros idiomas.

Unai: Con este trabajo se ha intentado crear un tipo de narrativa durante todo el álbum, pero a su vez la propia singularidad de cada canción para que puedan ser escuchadas individualmente con todo su sentido. El cantar en inglés tiene sus pros y sus contras, como todo. La sonoridad de las palabras es distinta al español, y también es cierto que el inglés puede abrirnos un mayor número de oyentes en todo el mundo.

Valente: En 2024 se cumplen 15 años del lanzamiento de su primer EP llamado Eterna. ¿Qué significa para ustedes el voltear en el tiempo y ver la trayectoria que han mantenido durante 15 años como banda? Además, ¿pueden comentarnos algún dato sobre «Eterna»?

Charly: “Eterna” fue una demo que, al día de hoy, no está publicada en ninguna plataforma digital. Es especial ya que fue la primera toma de contacto que tuvimos como banda, cantada en español y muy diferente al estilo que se ha ido desarrollando con cada álbum que hemos ido sacando.

Valente: Con los años también han producido varios videos musicales de diversas canciones. ¿Qué papel juega para ustedes como banda el lanzamiento de estos videoclips?

Alejandro: Mantenemos un enfoque muy especial en la música que hacemos. Sin embargo, es muy satisfactorio contar con una vertiente adicional a través de la cual podemos plasmar nuestra visión artística. Al ser Tides Of Insanity un álbum conceptual, los videoclips nos permiten ser más explícitos con el mensaje que queremos transmitir y el mundo en el que queremos sumergir al oyente.

Unai: La verdad es que, para mí al menos, es la guinda del pastel asociado a una canción. Se añade otro sentido más como es el de la vista, y al igual que una película basada en un libro, se puede utilizar para matizar esta narrativa que comentaba al inicio de la entrevista.

Elizabeth: Considero que es un contenido crucial para cualquier proyecto o banda, que los oyentes puedan poner cara a las personas a las que están escuchando. También hay videoclips en los que no aparecen los integrantes, y aun así el contenido suma a la hora de entender qué quiere transmitir la música, o a comprender mejor el concepto que se está tratando. Por lo tanto, los vídeos son imprescindibles al día de hoy para poder facilitar más producto o contenido a quienes lo van a consumir, así como mostrar más accesibilidad a los oyentes para conectar con la banda.

Valente: Su discografía cuenta con cuatro álbumes de larga duración entre otros lanzamientos más. ¿Cómo saben cuándo es el momento de dedicarse de lleno a crear un nuevo disco y que tan extenso es el proceso?

Charly: La verdad es que el proceso de composición de un álbum de Against Myself suele ser bastante largo. Siempre solemos tener algunas ideas sin desarrollar en profundidad grabadas entre disco y disco, pero cuando decidimos ponernos a trabajar en uno nuevo, es un proceso que lleva mucho tiempo, ya que no es solo escribir lo que van haciendo las guitarras, bajo, baterías, teclados o voces, escribir letras, etc., sino que también se suele trabajar una orquesta sinfónica completa, elementos electrónicos y atmosféricos y demás. Por otro lado, también nos gustan los temas de larga duración, por lo que es un plus de trabajo para intentar que quede todo lo mejor posible y con coherencia. Cada disco de Against Myself es un gran reto para todos nosotros.

Valente: Sky Ashes, Odyssey To Reflexion, Unity y Tides Of Insanity son los títulos de sus cuatro larga duración. ¿Qué elementos dirían que unen a estos lanzamientos y, por otro lado, qué elementos los hacen diferentes uno del otro? Y también para quien no conozca el sonido de Against Myself, ¿cuál pudiera ser el mejor disco para comenzar?

Elizabeth: Creo que, si quieres conocer a una banda, lo mejor es escuchar el último trabajo. Si éste te gusta, entonces puedes indagar más sobre el pasado y analizar su evolución y trayectoria.  En el caso de Against Myself, sin duda recomendaría el último disco, puesto que es el resultado de la evolución, cambios y crecimiento por el que ha pasado la banda. Los álbumes tienen en común el esfuerzo, cariño y tiempo que se les ha dedicado; todos llevan un pedacito de cada uno.

Charly: El uso de elementos orquestales puede ser un nexo en común entre todos los álbumes. Obviamente hay una evolución y mejora disco tras disco, las influencias pueden cambiar, la música va evolucionando y nos gusta adaptarnos a los nuevos tiempos. El disco con el que deberían comenzar a escucharnos es Tides Of Insanity, ahí es donde pueden escuchar lo que es Against Myself en la actualidad y para nosotros es nuestro mejor trabajo hasta la fecha.

Unai: Yo creo que el mejor disco es Tides Of Insanity. Es complejo, a mi modo de ver, atractivo, con tintes de varios estilos musicales. Yo creo que no deja indiferente a nadie.

Valente: Tides Of Insanity fue lanzado en 2023, viniendo de un evento como la pandemia que golpeó fuerte a nivel mundial. ¿Qué representa este lanzamiento en la carrera de Against Myself?

Unai: Como hablan ciertas canciones o partes de ellas en dicho álbum, esto es la superación en toda regla, la insistencia, el tesón y las ganas de llevar algo a cabo. Tantas que pese lo que pese y cueste lo que cueste, el sueño se hace realidad.

Alejandro: Resiliencia. Como individuos y como banda pasamos por momentos difíciles en los que mantenernos a flote fue difícil. Tomando en cuenta que había movilidad reducida, temas de salud y lo distanciados que estábamos, creo que sin querer algo de esto se hace notar en la historia del álbum. Es un disco en el que pusimos fuerza para verlo nacer e invitar a la gente a acompañarnos en la travesía de nuestra música.

Elizabeth: A nivel personal, marca un renacimiento de la banda, un antes y un después. La pandemia supuso impedimentos y también dificultades a la hora de avanzar con el proyecto. Aun así, pudimos seguir adelante y sacar nueva música a la luz, lo cual me hacer muy feliz personalmente. 

Valente: Este disco contiene la épica canción «Tides Of Insanity», todo un viaje musical de más de 19 minutos, con cambios de ritmos, elementos diversos y mucho más por descubrir. Platíquenme un poco sobre el proceso de creación de esta pieza en particular. ¿A qué desafíos se enfrentan al crear música que supera los 10 minutos? (Considerando que tienen canciones como «Oniros» o «When Words Kill» que también superan los 10 minutos).

Alejandro: Creo que el reto principal es la estructuración del tema. Si tienes un mensaje o historia ya aclarada, te será más sencillo componer, pues ya sabes lo que debes expresar. Lo más difícil es quedarte en una suerte de limbo en el que no sabes qué ideas funcionan y cuáles no. Para “Tides Of Insanity”, por ejemplo, sabíamos que queríamos un cierre por todo lo alto y esperanzador con un toque de final abierto, y en nuestro sentir lo hemos conseguido. Cabe destacar la bajada de intensidad previa a dicho final, es crucial contar con algo de contraste dinámico para que al escuchar la vuelta de la banda se sienta más potente aún.

Elizabeth: Al ser un disco conceptual, afortunadamente podíamos desarrollar la historia a contar. La música es como la banda sonora de dicha historia, por lo que según iba ocurriendo, nos íbamos imaginando cómo podía sonar. Los detalles fueron más complicados puesto que queríamos que todo encajara, tuviera sentido y también conexión con lo anterior.

Valente: «When Words Kill» es una pieza que han interpretado en vivo. ¿Pueden platicarnos si representa un reto como banda el interpretar una canción de larga duración en concierto? Desde el punto de vista del fan parece que puede ser un arma de doble filo, entre impresionar a la audiencia o bien alejarlos un poco por lo extenso de la pieza. Y en un tema relacionado, ¿prefieren las presentaciones en vivo o se consideran más una banda de estudio?

Unai: Creo que nos defendemos bien en ambos ámbitos. Yo personalmente disfruto muchísimo grabando y escuchando después el resultado de tanto esfuerzo, enseñándoselo a la gente, etc. Pero mentiría si digo que no me gusta tocar en directo, claro está. Ver cómo la gente salta, canta, o te acompaña en un “vals” en “Tides Of Insanity” no tiene precio.

Alejandro: Hoy en día hemos interpretado “Tides Of Insanity” en la gran mayoría de conciertos que hemos dado. La verdad es que el tiempo se pasa volando y gran parte de la audiencia nos ha comunicado lo mucho que disfrutan ver un tema épico en vivo. Eso último no hace más que animarnos para tocar más y hacer más, ja ja.

Elizabeth: Against Myself es una banda con una gran riqueza compositiva. Contamos con unas orquestas muy desarrolladas y con muchos detalles que se van descubriendo escucha tras escucha.  Es una banda ideal de estudio para escuchar cómodamente en tu salón o coche, pero, por otro lado, disfrutamos muchísimo de llevar esa música al escenario y ver que el público lo disfruta con nosotros, por lo que creo que hemos conseguido una dinámica e interacción con la audiencia que también permite apreciar la ejecución en directo. Resumiendo, diría que es una banda de ambos campos.

Charly: Componer y, por otro lado, tocar temas largos en directo, siempre es un reto que afrontamos con mucha ilusión. Al público le gusta y casi siempre que podemos llevamos un tema de larga duración en el setlist. En Against Myself disfrutamos a partes iguales tanto el hacer discos como luego presentarlos en vivo.

Valente: A nuestros invitados internacionales nos gusta preguntarles cómo se vive la escena metalera en sus países, entonces la pregunta obligada es: ¿cómo se vive la escena metalera en España?

Alejandro: En España, como en muchos otros países, la escena metalera y musical está llena de sacrificios y obstáculos. Sin embargo, algo que me parece que hace una diferencia es tener artistas y exponentes renombrados muy cerca y dentro del país. Es algo que, para mí, aviva la llama de los oyentes y los aspirantes a músicos. El sueño se siente más posible que en lugares con poca industria musical o escena metalera. 

Unai: Creo que como en todos lados. Sí que es verdad que aquí a veces se siente, al menos por mi parte, menos apoyo a las bandas locales que a las extranjeras. Lo difícil es darse a conocer, que la gente se sepa tus canciones, etc. Poco a poco.

Valente: México es un país que cuenta con una buena base de fans del Metal hecho en España, pero ahora quisiera preguntarles si en España ven a México como un buen mercado consumidor de Heavy Metal.

Elizabeth: México es el segundo hogar del metal español, en mi opinión. La gente es cálida, apoya muchísimo, es entregada en los conciertos y siempre están animando a las bandas. Es un gran pilar para las bandas de España recibir tanto apoyo y cariño de México. 

Unai: Por supuesto. Yo creo que es una base fundamental del metal a nivel mundial. Es increíble como muchas veces te conoce más gente de allí que de España. A mí me encantaría poder hacer un concierto allí.

Valente: ¿Qué podemos esperar de Against Myself en 2024? ¿La tan esperada visita a nuestro país, quizá?

Against Myself: ¡Nos encantaría cruzar el océano y poder disfrutar de México y su gente! Ojalá pueda darse pronto. Por ahora seguiremos con las fechas de la gira de Tides Of Insanity intercalándolo con la composición de nueva música.

Valente: No me queda más que agradecer su tiempo y buena vibra para la realización de esta entrevista, esperamos verles en este lado del mundo próximamente y escuchar mucha música nueva de Against Myself. ¿Unas últimas palabras?

Elizabeth: Mil gracias por el espacio y el tiempo dedicado. Siempre es un placer tratar con personas que hacen una labor tan bonita. ¡Un abrazo enorme!

One of the most controversial musical acts within the realm of modern metal is Dogma. A band formed by four women disguised as sinner nuns, with heavy music and lyrical themes of anti-religion and sexual liberation. Their identity and country of origin is unknown, but certainly their impact on the music industry is well recognized by thousands of followers around the world.

Valente from Metalópolis Podcast had the chance to spoke to Lilith, vocalist of this heavy metal/hard rock act that will soon be in Mexican territory. Discover more about this mysterious and polemic band in the following lines!

V: Hi Dogma! How are you?

 L: Hello sinner, I am Lilith. the voice that beckons from the shadows. Welcome to Dogma.

V: First of all, welcome to Metalópolis. I want to thank you for this interview, your band is really unique, and I think that more than interesting, but let’s start from the beginning. What is Dogma? A band, a project, a religion, a cult, where does it start and why is it called Dogma?

L: As our sinners delve into the depths of our offerings, we encourage them to interpret our dogma in their own unique way. It is our earnest hope that amidst their interpretations, they capture the essence of our philosophy focused on individual empowerment and self-discovery. We stand as an open invitation, beckoning individuals to embrace their distinct paths and, in doing so, kindle inspiration in others. In our vision, we aspire to witness a world where personal freedom and authenticity stand as the reigning principles. In the domain of contradiction, we stand as Dogma, an original doctrine championing anti-dogmatism. We perceive contrast as a clarifying lens for the eyes. The paradox embodied in «freedom nuns» amplifies the essence of «freedom,» underscoring that nuns, tethered by their faith, are not genuinely free. This extends to our overarching critique of organized religion.

V: Dogma plays a sharp Heavy Metal with awesome lyrics about sexual liberation and anti-religion themes. Where does the inspiration come from to play Heavy Metal and to those lyrics? What is the message that Dogma wants to spread over the world?

L: We embrace the belief that divinity resides within each individual. Every person stands as the master of their own destiny, bearing the weight of responsibility for their choices. At the heart of our ethos lies a message advocating self-empowerment and individual sovereignty. Woven into our lyrics is a narrative intricately connected to the message we endeavor to spread: a captivating story that serves as an embodiment of evolution and empowerment, challenging societal norms and embracing rebellion. Our inspiration is drawn from the conviction in the power of transformation, the allure of the forbidden, and an unwavering desire to break free from the constraints of the ordinary. As a sacred commandment, we hold the principle of respecting others’ decisions and integrity in the highest regard.

V: Your first cd named “Dogma” was released in 2023. Previously you have released four singles and some videos too. How do you feel about the reception of these works on the Heavy Metal world? Can you tell us a little bit about the recording process of the videos?

L: We are ecstatic, though it comes as no surprise. Dogma fills a void, delivering what many crave and yearn for. Sinners gravitate towards us because we embody desire, awakening, and the voice of the unheard.

Regarding the videos and their process, it’s crucial to note that Dogma is a conceptual album based on a 13-chapter novel. Our aim was to musicalize each chapter, so the videos align closely with the narrative of the songs. The themes were already established through the music, making the video production process a direct extension of our creative vision.

V: Being a new band in this hard music world, what are the challenges that are on the way? Talking about recording songs, making videos, releasing your first CD…

L: For us, the greatest challenge that bands face is vision. Once you have a clear vision, everything flows. When you know what you want to say, the songs practically write themselves. It takes craftsmanship and surrounding yourself with the right team, but for us, the key is to start with the why (as Simon Sinek says).

Then come the operational challenges, which have to do with competing in a world where people’s attention is the currency everyone is vying for. It’s important that the vision is unique or fills a gap, or breaks with established paradigms that no one questions. Everything else is just work, hard work, but the most important thing is the vision. If you don’t know where you’re going, it’s certain you won’t get anywhere.

Finding the right team is perhaps the biggest challenge for recordings, videos, and promotion because it’s necessary for the team to understand and share our vision. We’re not just a band united by music or musical affinity, but by a deep philosophy that we need everyone working with us to embrace. That said, we are very pleased with the team we have formed so far.

V: Your song «My First Peak» was voted as one of the best metal songs of 2023 on Metal Hammer magazine. Considering that is your second single, how do you feel about that nomination?

L: We are delighted by the acknowledgment; we see it as an integral part of our growth, spreading our message and gaining recognition. Remember, we stand as the voice for the unheard, and there are countless voices yet to be heard. This could undoubtedly be considered a «second peak.»

V: Besides your musical and lyrical themes, Dogma burst the internet for the appearance of the band. Why the nun theme?

L: The deliberate selection of «nuns» as our symbolic contrast is purposeful, embodying the opposing force to our message. Nuns, frequently bound by their steadfast faith and restricted by the confines of religious strictness, epitomize the sharp contradiction that propels our dedication to freedom and resistance against oppressive structures. They act as a canvas for our rebellion, mirroring our desire to surpass the commonplace and challenge the unquestioned.

V: On the other hand, some people may think that Dogma is all about the image and not the music. To those people, what would your message be?

L: That’s their perspective, and we respect everyone’s point of view. Perhaps that’s how they engage with Dogma, maybe that’s what matters to them about Dogma. That’s perfectly acceptable, individual freedom is significant.

V: And now for 2024, what are your plans? Will we see Dogma playing live soon?

L: Indeed, touring marks the imminent culmination of our inception and the inaugural stride in our conquest.

V: Thank you very much for your time. I hope that Dogma will haunt some Mexican stages in the near future. Any last words for this interview?

L: That stands as one of our forthcoming endeavors. Numerous Mexican sinners have reached out, and we shall deliver. As a parting message to our sinners: Life’s playlist may be tumultuous, but amid the dissonance, discover your unique rhythm. Embrace the beats of struggle, for they lead to the symphony of resilience. Every note in your journey narrates a tale of overcoming. So, turn up the volume, let the melody of your strength resonate loudly, and claim the soundtrack of your life. In the realm of Dogma, you’re not merely a listener; you’re the conductor of your own triumph.

We embrace you, Metalópolis, for you are true sinners.

March just started and that means we are soon to welcome Chaotian, a death metal band from Copenhaguen, Denmark, in their first tour around Mexico. Valente Salazar (V) from Metalópolis Podcast had the opportunity to talk to Søren Willatzen (S), guitarist and leader of Chaotian, about the band’s music style, their origin, and their expectations of this tour.

V: Hi Søren, welcome to Metalópolis! How are you?

S: Hey Valente, I am good, excited for the tour!

V: First of all, Chaotian plays a really loud and hard death metal. Can you tell us a little bit about the beginning of the band, why did you choose the death metal way, and why did you call the band Chaotian?

S: The band was formed in 2017, when Andreas and I met in a rehearsal room to try to play some old Sepultura. We got along and quickly decided to play more in the death/thrash vein, but it soon (d)evolved into purely death metal – preferring not to be locked down to ‘just’ playing fast and thrashy. The name originates from my student days as a geology student. Chaotian is an eon of the earliest formation of Earth where chaos reigned.

V: The lyrics of Chaotian are about chaos, death and even some cosmic horror. Where do you find the inspiration for these topics?

S: The inspiration comes from many things, but mostly some sort of story or idea that intrigues me. I have taken inspirations from horror flicks and books, interesting mythology, and sometimes scientific ideas. Generally, there’s an apocalyptic meaning behind the songs.

V: «Where Gods Excarnate» was your first release back in 2018, and «Effigies of Obsolescence» is your last record release in 2022. In all these years, how has the evolution of the band been?

S: “Where Gods Excarnate” came out in 2018, so the evolution from 2018 – 2022 has been pretty significant (to us), but not exactly dramatic. It’s still death metal, perhaps less thrashy and darker, and at times even atmospheric, but a heavy focus on riff and exploring the limits of what we can do to create death metal in our vision as a three piece is still very much there.

V: Can you tell us a little about your background, your beginnings on the heavy metal world?

S: It all started when my dad introduced me to hard rock and early heavy metal like AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Metallica etc. Then it took off and I began digging deeper and deeper, finally listening to the more extreme styles sometime in my early teenage years. I’ve played in bands since I was a kid in school, first as a drummer and later as a guitarist. Professionally I’m a Master of Science in Geology – Geoscience and am currently working as a Meteorologist.

V: Chaotian has played on festivals and individual gigs. What kind of concerts are your favorite to play and why?

S: That’s a tough one as we’ve played quite a few good shows at bars but also concert halls/festivals. I’d say in general a crazy, pumped, and moshing crowd at a 100-capacity venue is definitely more fun than 500-capacity where everyone has their arms crossed and sipping IPAs.

V: You’ll be playing in Mexico for the first time this year. What are your expectations about Mexican heavy metal fans?

S: We’re expecting some of the most dedicated and genuine metal fans on Earth. Hispanic metal fans are pretty well-known in Europe for their dedication and love for metal, so we are sure we’ll meet lots of metal maniacs.

V: On the other side, what can Mexican fans expect from the Chaotian live shows?

S: Three middling musicians doing their very best at playing their own songs while giving it their all, haha. No, it doesn’t matter if we play in front of 3 people or 300, we know and owe the crowd our very best. We’re already preparing a setlist to showcase Chaotian anno 2024 at their very best.

V: We always like to ask our international guests how is the metal scene in their countries, so how you guys perceive it in Denmark?

S: I think it’s pretty much split between the local underground scenes and the more mainstream ‘pop-metal’ crowd. By that I don’t necessarily mean that there aren’t overlaps, but the more popular crowd may only be aware and interested in the biggest bands. I think we have a good underground scene in death metal and maybe black metal too, but in general I don’t think we’re particularly blessed with talent. A good support from both older and younger people, so overall quite healthy.

V: What are your plans for 2024? Maybe we can hear some new music?

S: You will absolutely hear new music and see more shows.

A week before Metal Church’s presentation at Hell and Heaven Open Air 2023, a music festival held during the first weekend of November in Toluca, Mexico, Valente Salazar from Metalópolis Podcast spoke to Kurdt Vanderhoof, guitarist, and leader of the iconic heavy/thrash band.

Little did Kurdt know that the festival was a total organizational mess, and that Metal Church would be ultimately unable to perform. Not only them, but other 29 bands were cancelled, some even minutes before getting into stage. Breach of contracts, lack of equipment, economic debts, and plain lies are some of the reasons why many bands were cut off from the lineup.

Despite the bitter moment that Metal Church and their fans experienced, we wanted to share our talk with Kurdt, since his answers are timeless and give some insights of the band’s present.

Interview

V: Hi Kurdt! First of all, welcome to Metalópolis, we appreciate your time so much. How are you?

K: Thanks very much! Doing pretty good.

V: Metal Church is coming to Mexico to play in Hell & Heaven Open Air on Sunday November 5, but before we talk about that, for the people who don’t know yet the sound of Metal Church, how would you describe it?

K: We are an old school metal band. A bit thrashy at times, but still somewhat melodic.

V: I want to ask about the beginnings of Metal Church, one band with a lot of history and thirteen full-length releases. Back in time, what was your inspiration to start a band, what are your musical influences and why did you choose the guitar?

K: My first inspiration (like most musicians my age) was seeing The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. My biggest influences are the early 70’s bands like Rush, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin etc. I started out as a drummer when I was about 5, then at about 12 years old I switched to bass, and at 15 I switched to guitar.

V: Metal Church is a band formed in San Francisco, California, a place with a lot of metal bands and an important history on the Heavy Metal world. Do you think that there’s something special about San Francisco?

K: San Francisco has always been a very progressive town. So, it was a good place to create outside the conventional framework of popular music.

V: Metal Church is a Heavy Metal band with Power and Thrash Metal influences. Was it difficult to find the sound of the band?

K: No, it developed very naturally, and we were just honest about our musical direction and tastes.

V: What is the motivation that keeps you creating Heavy Metal music? With the passing of time, so many bands disappear or just don’t make anything special, but Metal Church keeps on the right way creating amazing albums like Congregation Of Annihilation (2023) and Damned If You Do (2018).

K: I don’t really know why, but I would have to say it’s just something you do and you can’t analyze it too much.

V: Talking about Congregation Of Annihilation (2023), can you share with us a little of the composition process and what means to you the release of the album this year?

K: It was pretty simple really. I had an album’s worth of material that I had written with Mike (Howe) in mind. But when he passed, I wasn’t sure if the band was going to continue. When we started working with Marc (Lopes) it was just one song at a time. He wrote the lyrics for this record, and it was nice to have a new influence in the band.

V: Speaking of the passing of time, what is your perception about the music industry? Especially in this new era when almost everything is based on the digital world.

K: Well, at least now the digital world, as far as recording is concerned, has gotten to the point that it sounds good. But I think that artists rely far too much on it. Also, I don’t like the fact that most metal albums all sound the same.

V: Metal Church returns to México at Hell & Heaven Open Air, what are your expectations about the festival, the crowd and about México in general?

K: It’s hard to say but we are very much looking forward to it. We have always had a great time playing in Mexico.

V: And on the other side, what can the crowd expect about the presentation of Metal Church?

K: We will be bringing back a lot of the early stuff and some deep tracks, plus a few new songs.

V: When you share stage with other bands, do you like to see other performances or prefer to rest and stay ready when it’s time for Metal Church to hit the stage?

K: Depends on the band. If it’s a band that I’m a fan of, then I always try to catch a bit of their set. But mostly we just concentrate on preparing for our show.

V: Do you like any «Modern Metal» bands? If so, can you tell us which?

K: Not really, I’m a very old school guy. I don’t like screamo stuff and I like a good singer with a good melody.

V: One last question, we like to ask our guest to share a message to all the people that are starting a Heavy Metal band, that begins with one instrument, that want to make their path in this beautiful but hard musical world. Can you share some advice for them?

K: That’s a very difficult question to answer because the music business is sooo different nowadays. But I can tell you this…play music because you love music, don’t do it to become a rock star or get rich.

A couple of days after their scheduled gig at Hell and Heaven Open Air, the band apologized to the Mexican fans for their absence at the festival. They stated:

“Due to circumstances beyond our control, we were not able to perform at the Hell & Heaven Festival. Our deepest apologies to our fans in Mexico”.

In the comments of their Facebook post, they shared a Change.org petition for the disappearance of the music festival (one that had already been signed by thousands of fans, musicians, and crew). Hopefully, we can attend a Metal Church show in Mexico, with the right conditions and promoter. Let’s hope for the best!
